Filippo Smaldo, Schutzpatron der Gehörlosen, wurde am 12. Mai 1996 durch Papst Johannes Paul II. selig gesprochen. Er kam am 27. Juli 1848 in Neapel zur Welt. Mit zwölf Jahren spürte er den starken Wunsch, Priester zu werden. Am 23. September 1871 erhielt er die Priesterweihe und widmete sich danach der Seelsorge in Süditalien. Insbesondere kümmerte er sich um Hörgeschädigte. Zusammen mit einem Freund gründete er in der italienischen Stadt Lecce im Jahr 1885 das Institut der Salisianerinnen vom Heiligsten Herzen, die sich der Erziehung tauber Kinder annehmen. Filippo erwarb große Verdienste bei der Entwicklung der Gebärdensprache. Er setzte sich auch sehr für jene Menschen ein, die im Zuge der Industrialisierung verarmten.

Im neuen Stadtrecht soll bei den Sitzungen auf Anforderung ein Gebärdendolmetscher beigestellt werden. Das sieht eine Novelle vor, die LH Gabi Burgstaller (SPÖ) eingebracht hat. Der Dolmetscher muss allerdings bis spätestens drei Tage vor der Sitzung angefordert werden.

By day another 300 comrades come by to lend support.
